This water plant which treats 20% of wastewater from San Francisco is unique in that it is one of the few plants in the entirety of the United States to nearly be built entirely underground. During dry seasons, it is capable of treating 17 MGD, but will skyrocket to 65 MGD during wetter seasons. The plant has many awards, winning the Large Plant of the Year Award in 2003 and the US Environmental Protection Agency National Clean Water Act Recognition Award for operations and maintenance excellence in 2004.
